Cancer Control Definition

Cancer control research is the conduct of basic and applied research in the behavioral, social, and population sciences to create or enhance interventions that, independently or in combination with biomedical approaches, reduce cancer risk, incidence, morbidity and mortality, and improve quality of life (Cancer Control Review Group, 1998 - modified).

Cancer Control Framework

Our Nation's collective fight against cancer has produced better ways to diagnose, treat, and control cancer. The dramatic changes in U.S. demographics, advances in biomedical and behavioral research, and the rapid pace of information technology, present new challenges and opportunities for cancer control research. Cancer control research aims to generate basic knowledge about how to change individual, and collective behavior, and to ensure that this newfound knowledge is translated into practice rapidly, effectively, and efficiently. In 1997, the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences was established to enhance NCI's ability to alleviate the burden of cancer through research in the following areas: epidemiology and cancer genetics, behavioral sciences, cancer surveillance, and cancer survivorship.

The dynamic and interdisciplinary nature of our work is illustrated in the DCCPS cancer control framework. This framework shows how our programs are linked together by the common goal of reducing the cancer burden.
